About

Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust provides care for over 275,000 children and young people every year. Alder Hey delivers clinical excellence for all children, for routine illnesses as well as very complex and rare conditions.

One of four stand-alone children’s hospitals in the UK, it is a national centre for neuro and craniofacial surgery, a regional centre for burns injuries and a Centre of Excellence for children with cancer, heart, spinal and brain disease. The Trust is one of only four epilepsy surgical centres in the UK and one of only two accredited major trauma centres in the North West. Alder Hey is also a respiratory Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) surge centre and is the referral centre for the treatment of congenital heart defects in North West England, North Wales and Isle of Man. It became the first UK Centre of Excellence for Childhood Lupus in 2010.

Alder Hey is the first accredited Investing in Children hospital in the UK. It has a dedicated patient experience programme which includes the award winning Alder Hey Arts involving music therapy, dance programmes, storytelling and animation projects. It is also one of a few hospitals to have a Children and Young Person’s Forum.

Alder Hey opened a new hospital ‘Alder Hey in the Park’ in 2015. Europe’s first hospital in a park, the new facility provides a purpose-built, unique and world-class healing environment for children and young people.

Clinical services

With a comprehensive range of high quality clinical services, totalling over 45 specialities Alder Hey can offer consultancy and support with developing clinical pathways and services for patients and families.

Alder Hey can share experience of working through clinical networks with evidence of how robust clinical peer review and clinical standardisation has driven up service quality.

Alder Hey can provide expert second opinion services both remotely through telemedicine and face-to-face consultations either in–country through visiting Doctors programmes or by establishing referral pathways to our specialist UK clinical teams. 

Hospital design and build

Alder Hey can provide expert support for the feasibility assessment, design and clinical modelling of safe, high quality paediatric facilities. 

Hospital management

Alder Hey can provide professional support in establishing the governance and clinical management processes for the delivery of complex health services to ensure clinical safety and quality requirements are implemented and maintained. 

Paediatric education and training

Alder Hey has particular expertise in paediatric  medical and nurse training and can offer a range of bespoke packages that include but are not limited to:

  • clinical and managerial observerships at our world-class new hospital facility
  • Support the establishment and maintenance of high quality training and education programmes for a wide range of healthcare professionals in country
  • co-develop bespoke specialist training and education programmes which combine the short term benefits of training delivered in our UK specialist site with follow up in-country support to sustain learning 

Telehealth and telecare

Alder Hey can provide technology enabled clinical support and patient management using digital care to offer remote clinical solutions to the most complex patients.

Alder Hey is seeking opportunities to develop collaborative partnerships with organisations that share our goals of putting the child at the centre of a continuum of multi-disciplinary care.

We will work with partners to support the long-term capacity development of local health economies, medical professionals and managers to jointly cultivate world-leading services.
